Holy mass begins as Conclave prepares to elect new Pope

The process of Cardinals electing the 267th Catholic Pope has commenced in Rome.

A Holy Mass is ongoing at St. Peter’s Basilica for the election of a new Roman Catholic Pope.

The Mass is presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.

On Tuesday, Cardinals were moved into their Vatican accommodation, where they will stay during the conclave.

133 Cardinal-electors are scheduled to gather on Wednesday in the Sistine Chapel for an election that could last hours, days, or even months.

The process of electing a new Pope was set in motion following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 and his burial on April 26 at the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica.

The late Catholic pontiff died after suffering from a stroke, coma and heart failure.
