I got discouraged, almost ran away during my early days as Nigerian president – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that he almost ran away
from the media at the inception of his office as president.

Tinubu said he got so discouraged that he almost stopped
watching or reading newspapers due to the economic situation in the country.

He, however, assured that the country’s economic situation
is turning around for good.

Speaking in Katsina State over the weekend, the president
said: “Nigeria is a success, the economy is turning around, it has bent the
corner.

“When we started, it was challenging, and I almost ran away
from watching or reading the newspapers.

“I got discouraged and stayed put on my decisions, believing
that the ability of a leader to take decisions at the right time is the
hallmark of leadership.

“We took it and stayed with it, and it will be rewarding,
it’s already bearing fruits.”

This comes as the outgoing President of the African
Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, decried Nigeria’s declining GDP per
capita, noting that countries like South Korea and other Asian economic giants
have left the country behind.

He said that despite the fact that Nigeria and the two Asian
countries were once almost at par in GDP per capita.

Adesina made these remarks during his keynote address at the
20th anniversary dinner of investment firm Chapel Hill Denham in Lagos.

He blamed the problem on a lack of focused economic plans
and implementation by successive administrations in the country, as a result of
which more Nigerians are now poor than they were at Independence in 1960.

He said efforts should be geared towards making Nigeria the
economic powerhouse of the continent.
