The Indy 500 is here and you can watch one of the highlights on the motorsport calendar live on Sky Sports F1 this weekend.
Known as ‘the greatest spectacle in racing’, a field of 33 drivers will battle it out over 200 laps around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis oval in a race which some F1 drivers admit is too scary.
Former Ferrari reserve driver Robert Shwartzman took a shock pole for Prema in qualifying, becoming the first rookie to achieve that feat in 42 years.
Former F1 driver Takuma Sato, 48, lines up second, with McLaren F1 reserve driver Pato O’Ward taking third and runaway IndyCar championship leader Alex Palou was only sixth.
There has been huge controversy surrounding Team Penske after defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden and team-mate Will Power were found to have an illegally modified part on their cars during qualifying.
As a result, they will start at the back of the field and Newgarden’s hopes of becoming the first driver to win the event three times in a row have taken a bit hit.
IndyCar owner Roger Penske also fired team president Tim Cindric, IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer in the wake of an Indianapolis 500 cheating scandal.
You can watch every session live on Sky Sports F1, including uninterrupted coverage of the race itself on Sunday May 25 which follows the Monaco Grand Prix.
Indy 500 weather
The forecast for Indianapolis suggests rain will not interfere with 109th running of the Indy 500 on Sunday May 25 with temperatures around 20C and plenty of cloud cover, which will mean fast conditions for the cars.
