The family of Edwin Clark, elder statesman and former
federal commissioner for information, has released the official burial plans
for the late Ijaw leader who died on February 17 at the age of 97.
According to a statement signed by Penaowei Clark, his first
son, the funeral activities will begin on May 7 and span nearly two weeks,
ending with a thanksgiving service in Delta state on May 18.
The programme will kick off with a memorial lecture and
tributes at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja on May 7.
A valedictory session in Clark’s honour will hold at the
senate chambers of the national assembly on May 8.
His body is scheduled to leave Abuja on May 10, travelling
to Warri and then Yenagoa for lying-in-state ceremonies. That same day, a
traditional wrestling contest will be held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital.
The funeral service is scheduled for May 13 at St Peter’s
Anglican Church in Kiagbodo, Delta state, Clark’s hometown.
A novelty football match will take place on May 17 in
Kiagbodo as part of the farewell activities.
“This programme reflects a collective effort, in partnership
with the Delta State Government, the Federal Government, PANDEF, and community
leaders, to honour and celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Chief Edwin
Kiagbodo Clark,” Penaowei wrote.
“We welcome all friends, associates, and well-wishers to
join us during these events as we pay our last respects to this giant of our
time.”
