The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has rolled out the
second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system in four
missions abroad.
In a statement issued Sunday by AS Akinlabi, NIS public
relations officer, the countries where the service was expanded to include the
United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.
The system was launched in the US on Friday and kicked off
on Monday in Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil, according to the statement.
Akinlabi said the contactless application processes are also
available in Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Launched late last year, the system is designed to allow
Nigerians renew their passports without visiting any passport centre for
biometrics capturing.
According to the NIS, applicants can now renew their
passports by downloading the agency’s mobile app on the Google play store.
Akinlabi said the Apple store version will be onboarded
shortly, and an enhanced version of the app for Android and iOS users will be
deployed to further improve user experience and accessibility.
Nigeria and Australia will mark the third phase of the
rollout.
“A future date will be announced for both countries in due
course,” the NIS spokesperson noted.
Akinlabi assured Nigerians that the NIS remains committed to
delivering innovative and efficient service to all citizens across the world.
