On November 6, 2021, the people of Anambra made a resolute decision to elect a leader whose vision aligned with their aspirations.

In the lead-up to the election, the state witnessed a sharp division between two dominant factions: the political elite and the masses. Professor Charles Soludo’s humility and people-oriented political manifesto naturally endeared him to the populace, whereas Andy Uba’s aristocratic approach positioned him among the state’s oligarchs. It would be fair to say that those who sought a middle ground placed their support behind Valentine Ozigbo.

Despite the threats of violence, political intimidation, and the prevailing insecurity that characterized the election period, the electorate remained undeterred. In the end, Professor Soludo emerged victorious. This election was, arguably, the first in Anambra’s political history where voters prioritized merit over party affiliation, as Soludo enjoyed broad support across political lines.

On March 17, 2022, he was officially sworn in to navigate the governance of the state for the next four years. However, taking over from an administration marked by frivolous expenditures and mismanagement was undoubtedly a daunting challenge. The previous government inherited a surplus but left behind a legacy of deficits and financial recklessness. An administration that legitimised merrymaking and irrationlity as tools of governance. Yes, there is no better way to describe the Willie Obiano’s eight years outing in anambra than the aforesaid. It institutionalized extravagance and ineffectual governance, taking preference to pleasure and opulent lifestyle against delivering good governance to Ndi Anambra. This makes it imperative for Soludo to institute financial discipline, transparency, and accountability to restore fiscal prudence in the state.

True to his expertise as a distinguished professor of macroeconomics, Soludo’s administration has demonstrated strict adherence to these financial principles. Consequently, Anambra has, in recent times, emerged as a model state, admired by many across Nigeria.

When Ndi Anambra entrusted Soludo with their mandate three years ago, it was not merely an electoral victory but a social contract—one predicated on the expectation of transformative leadership. Today, that trust is yielding dividends as Soludo spearheads massive infrastructural development, revitalizes education and healthcare, reintroduces essential public utilities, and adopts a governance model that prioritizes the people. His leadership reflects not just political acumen but statesmanship, firmly rooted in the collective good. However, despite his commendable achievements, his administration’s approach to security remains a weak point.

Revamping Infrastructure and Roads

One of Soludo’s most notable achievements is his commitment to infrastructural development, particularly road construction and rehabilitation. Recognizing the pivotal role of good roads in economic growth, his administration embarked on an ambitious project to construct and rehabilitate over 300 kilometers of roads across Anambra. Previously impassable roads, such as the Amansea–Ufuma Road, Ogidi–Nnewi Road, Awka Inner City Roads, Amawbia–Uga Road, and Agulu–Ozubulu Road, are either completed or under construction. It is also noteworthy that he constructed the first tarred road in Enugwu-Umuonyia, a community in Orumba South LGA. Additionally, the Ekwulobia Flyover, upon completion, is poised to be one of the most sophisticated in the Southeast.

Beyond roads, the administration is constructing the Three-Arm Zone Government House, set to be one of the most modern governmental complexes in Nigeria. The Solution Fun City and the Awka City Park, spanning 12.7 and 20 hectares respectively, are ambitious projects expected to drive economic activities and tourism in Anambra, further boosting the state’s financial prosperity.

Transforming the Education Sector

Education remains a central pillar of Soludo’s administration. His government has recruited thousands of qualified teachers to enhance learning in public schools, ensuring access to quality education for all. Furthermore, the introduction of free education from primary to senior secondary school in public institutions has alleviated the financial burden on many parents, making education more accessible to the less privileged.

Revitalizing Healthcare for a Healthier Anambra

Governor Soludo has made remarkable strides in the healthcare sector, focusing on the revitalization of hospitals and primary healthcare centers. His administration has renovated and equipped several general hospitals with state-of-the-art medical facilities, significantly improving healthcare delivery. A testament to his commitment is the ongoing construction of the Anambra State Nursing and Midwifery School in Isuofia, a facility designed to meet international standards and strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.

Reintroducing Public Water Supply

A groundbreaking initiative of the Soludo administration is the revival of the Anambra State Water Corporation, aimed at restoring public water supply. For decades, residents of Anambra relied on private boreholes and water vendors, resulting in exorbitant costs and unreliable access to clean water. By rehabilitating abandoned water projects and initiating new ones, Soludo’s government seeks to ensure that every household enjoys affordable and safe drinking water. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance public health by reducing waterborne diseases and improving sanitation across the state.

Governance for the People, Not the Elite

Unlike many politicians who prioritize the interests of the political elite, Soludo has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the masses. His policies are designed to benefit the average citizen, with a focus on rural development, market reconstruction, road construction in underserved areas, free education, and expanded healthcare access. His leadership is characterized by transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, ensuring that democracy delivers tangible benefits to the people.

Addressing the Security Challenges

Despite his impressive strides in governance, security remains a significant challenge for Soludo’s administration. The state has witnessed a rise in violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnappings, and cult-related violence, often perpetrated by non-state actors who operate with alarming impunity. Many critics argue that these security concerns have overshadowed his achievements, posing a serious threat to stability and governance.

However, the government is beginning to make headway in tackling these issues. Security forces have intensified operations, leading to the arrest of several kidnappers and the dismantling of their camps. Formerly volatile areas are gradually experiencing a return to normalcy. The Homeland Security Law, alongside the establishment of security outfits such as Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga Achi, signifies a renewed commitment to combating insecurity. Though challenges persist, there is growing optimism that security will improve under Soludo’s watch.

Conclusion

As Anambra continues on its trajectory of growth, it is evident that Governor Soludo is not merely fulfilling campaign promises—he is exceeding expectations. The people of Anambra made a wise electoral choice, and with each passing day, his administration reinforces their decision. While challenges remain, particularly in the area of security, Soludo’s leadership offers a compelling vision for a prosperous, modern, and inclusive Anambra.

Indeed, Anambra is in safe hands.
